Discover Cape Town with all of its culinary delights, historic wine farms, beautiful scenery, and splendid architecture. Cape Town presents a true rainbow cuisine which has grown out of its indigenous roots as well as its varied colonial history.
Indigenous African cuisine consists of rib-sticking, wholesome food prepared with local ingredients like marogo (wild spinach) and maize meal. This native faire has been influenced by Dutch settlers in the 1600’s as well as Indonesian slaves who introduced gently spiced dishes from which favorites such as bobotie, denningvleis and sosaties emerged. When Afrikaners traveled into the country’s interior, the love for cooking things over open fires arose along with the popular braaivleis (BBQ) and preserving fruit and meat by drying. Also leaving their marks are the English settlers with traditional roasts and desserts like blancmange, the French Huguenots with their Gallic culinary traditions, and the Indians with their fabulous spicy curries.
Although South Africa is definitely a foodie melting pot, the cuisine nevertheless revolves around unique local ingredients. Local seasonal foods have become integral to South African cooking as have artisanal bread and cheese products and fresh seafood – crayfish (Cape rock lobster), snoek, and oysters.
The cuisine also offers interesting dishes such as biltong (air-dried spiced beef), ostrich steak, and game meats like sprinkbok and kudu. The unique Cape Malay cuisine of the BoKaap provides a gently-spiced treat in the koeksuster (a plaited, deep-fried pastry dipped in syrup). Add in a local South African wine, and you have a great destination waiting to be discovered!
